Streetwear To Skatewear
Fashion is ever evolving, and brands are moving with the times giving consumers what they want. The lines between streetwear and skate wear are being to crossed creating a new subculture and the subculture and that is taking the limelight at the moment.
Skate culture is huge and the love for the fashion is growing. It's because of brands such as Supreme and Champion that this look has become more mainstream and taken on board by more people. It's fashionable to wear skate clothing even though you may not be a skater.
Champion began their story in 1920 and made sports attire, as the years went on designs became influenced by music and streetwear and for their 60th anniversary they released their reverse weave sweat shirt. The culture of skate wear was becoming mainstream and the lines between streetwear and skate wear crossed over with skate wear turing into everyday clothing.
Skate wear is a culture and it is a culture that is taking over amongst the younger generations, nowadays you don't need to own a skateboard or even know how to skate to be engrossed in the culture. It has evolved faster than the Kardashians backsides and has become a look adopted by a whole generation not just by a few people. This subculture has revolutionised the fashion world.
There are hundreds of pages on social media allowing people who have a love for streetwear and skate wear to come together in an online community. The subculture and rise of social media has given a platform for the younger generation to build on… just take a look at @GullyGuyLeo . 15 year old Leo Mandella has over 600k followers on Instagram and a campaign with converse with has lead to his face being plastered all over buses that trace round the streets of London. He’s built his identity through clothing as have so many others, pages such as The Basement are giving a platform, businesses have surfaced, we’ve been given brands such as HUF and Palace, but not to forget it’s given people friendships. Fashion brings people together because of their mutual love for the clothes and in this day and age with all the bad press Gen Z’s get this is a good thing, a great thing at that.
